What is Your
Basal Metabolic Rate?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) calculates the number of calories needed to perform basic bodily functions, such as breathing and blood circulation. BMR is often used interchangeably with resting metabolic rate (RMR), which measures the number of calories you burn at rest.

Both measurements tell us how many calories our body is currently burning and gives us a baseline of how many calories we need to consume to lose or maintain a healthy weight.

How the BMR Calculator Works

Calculating your BMR involves a complicated formula, so our BMR calculator helps take care of the work for you based on a few simple inputs, such as your height, weight, sex, and activity level.

To properly calculate your BMR, weigh yourself in the morning before eating breakfast and after waking from sleep. This calculation will give you an unbiased assessment of how many calories your body is currently burning at rest.

Why Use a BMR Calculator to Lose Weight?

To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume.

So by calculating your BMR, you can create a meal plan to consume fewer calories than your BMR to lose weight.

Your BMR calculator can also be used to calculate how many calories you can consume without putting on additional weight.

Can I Improve My BMR?

Yes, you can improve your BMR through small lifestyle changes, such as exercise and diet modifications. As you’ll learn in the Seriously Simple Steps program, small lifestyle changes, such as eating protein-rich foods and building lean muscle, can contribute to a higher BMR. On the other hand, certain foods can also lower your BMR along with a sedentary lifestyle, making weight loss more difficult.
